DIY Hallway Closet Remodel

Before

This has to be one of the easiest projects we have done so far! Our old coat closet was sooo boring and dingy looking with the dirty looking paint color that our entire house was painted in before we bought it. It is bad... it is a mix between yellow and beige but just looks like it is dirty.

Sneak Peak

Here is a sneak peak of the finished product.

I wanted to keep the shelf on the top and work off of that. We took the closet bar out and removed the folding door. We spackled all of the holes and sanded them down to be painted so  you cannot tell that there was a door there before.

I wanted hooks for the kids' backpacks and jackets as well as a storage bin under the lid to the bench. We installed 1x4's into studs at the height that I want all of the hooks to be installed. I like the look of this and it makes it stronger. We spackled over the screw holes and caulked around the edges where the wood meets the walls to make it look seamless. We also added another piece of wood around the back of the closet for more hooks where the shelf support boards are.

Make sure it is level

Wallpaper and Beadboard

image10

Wallpaper....nobody told me how hard it was to install the wallpaper! It is a sticky, slimy, watery mess! I originally wanted to do wallpaper on the sides AND the middle section as well. Thankfully I started with the back section because once that was done...I was done.

In retrospect, I should have installed the wallpaper then put the hook support boards up. Maybe I will tackle another wallpaper project in the future and remember that....Maybe.

The Beadboard was easy, we just added it as a panel to the front of the bench.

Paint the trim

image11

I painted the shelf and the trim bright white to stand out.

Paint the walls

image12

I painted the walls dark gray to contrast with the bright white.

Hooks

image13

I added all the hooks I wanted! Now it is time for the bench seat...

Plywood for the base

image14

Now we will add wood stained wood slats to the top.

Stain the wood slats

image15

We used Dark Walnut Stain for this project.

It is missing something.

image16

We wanted to add a lip to the front of the bench to make it look thicker than it was.

There we go...

Almost done...

Here we are...

As you can see, we updated the flooring and added new trim around the door. To see more on the trim, click here.
